Motivation

A student with motivation concerns may ...

  • have low energy
  • not see the cause/effect or "value" in task completion
  • lack intrinsic meaning for a task
  • not follow-through
  • say, and intend, to try more
  • have limited support systems or over-involved support systems
  • seem to have low affect

When supporting a student with low motivation, some general strategies include

  • take care of their "personal selves"--mental and physical wellbeing impact motivation
  • survey students for likes and dislikes in general--avoid an on-demand what will motivate you to do X (the answer may be nothing in that moment)
  • state the value of your assignment explicitly; avoid vague reasons such as "because we need practice"
  • assign reasonable, attainable tasks
  • prioritize assignments
  • break complex tasks down into smaller segments
  • offer choice in tasks and assignments, and in presentation style
  • encourage and support self-esteem in general

Interventions may include

  • behavior contracts
  • reinforcement systems (what am I working for)
  • Check in Check out systems
  • mentor relationships on campus
  • teach the idea and strategies for Boring Moments
