CDPH Safe Schools For All Guidance Update

January 5, 2022

Dear LGUSD Families,

I wanted to provide information on the California Department of Public Health's (CDPH) updated guidance for schools. This afternoon they updated and clarified the following topics:

  • Isolation for students (i.e., when a student has been infected with the virus, even if they don’t have symptoms): As has always been the case, CDPH K-12 Schools guidance (in Section 10) recommends that individuals follow the general CDPH guidance regarding isolation.  Thus, per the now-updated general CDPH guidance, for “Everyone, regardless of vaccination status, previous infection or lack of symptoms… Isolation can end after day 5 if symptoms are not present or are resolving and a diagnostic specimen collected on day 5 or later tests negative.” See the general guidance for more.

  • Quarantine for students (i.e., when a student might have been exposed to the virus and may or may not be infected): The current CDPH K-12 guidance regarding modified and standard quarantines remains unchanged at this time. That said, we are actively reviewing new CDC guidance (issued yesterday, Jan 4, 2021) and hope to provide updates soon.

In light of this updated guidance, site administrators and the district office team are working to notify families eligible to come this afternoon between 3:00-5:00pm to take the antigen test to end their isolation and return to school. A follow-up detailed FAQ will be sent to all families tomorrow.

Thank you for your support and patience as we have worked through expanded testing opportunities, scheduling vaccination clinics, and monitoring changing guidance. Together we will keep our schools healthy and safe.

Yours in education,
Paul Johnson
Superintendent

Masks Provide Protection

LGUSD Healthy Schools Week Masks
Correct and consistent mask use is a critical step everyone can take to prevent to the spread of COVID and stay healthy. Also, wearing a mask is the most significant factor in being able to follow the modified quarantine process to stay in school.

Masks are required indoors for everyone on the school campus, regardless of vaccination status.  Students, staff, and visitors may also wear them outside as an added layer of protection.  When choosing a mask, look at how well it filters the air and how many layers it has.
masking instructions
If you use a cloth mask, it should be tight-fitting and made of materials that filter out small particles.  A good cloth mask has:

  • Two layers of tightly woven cotton with a third layer of non-woven fabric.  The third layer could be a mask filter insert or a synthetic fabric such as polypropylene.
  • Have a nose wire to reduce gaps from the nose.
  • Adjustable ear loops or straps that go around the head to reduce gaps from the face.

double mask graphicYou can easily increase your protection by double masking.  Wear a disposable mask underneath your cloth mask.  Disposable masks are available on all school campuses in the main office, library, and every classroom for students and visitors to use for masking.

To help increase the fit of a mask, you may knot and tuck ear loops of a 3-ply mask where they join the edge of the mask.  You can see how to increase the fit of your disposable mask here.
You can support the importance of masking at home. Watch mask videos that have been shared with students on the LGUSD Healthy & Safe Schools 21-22 playlist. Check out the example below.

LGUSD COVID Testing

We offer daily COVID testing for symptomatic students and staff at 2:30 pm at the District Office.

We also offer asymptomatic testing every day after school beginning at 3:00 (and 12:30

In light of the Omicron surge, beginning today through January 14, we are opening our PCR Covid Clinic to the immediate family (parents and siblings) of students enrolled in Los Gatos Union School District.
