STEAM

Los Gatos Union School District is deeply committed to fostering the next generation of innovators through a dynamic, hands-on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) education for all TK-8 students. STEAM education is the real-world application of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. It is the intentional and authentic integration between two or more content areas to drive instruction through observation, inquiry, and problem-solving. The integration with art and design is a means of connecting and communicating understanding of content areas, not just as an enhancement in a lesson. We believe in empowering students with the critical thinking, problem-solving, and creative skills essential for success in the 21st century and beyond.

Our comprehensive approach includes:

  • Engaging STEAM labs: Each of our four elementary schools boasts a well-equipped STEAM Lab, complete with a wide range of tools, consumable materials, Chromebooks, iPads, 3D Printers, Cubelets, Makey Makey’s, Micro:bits and other robotics designed to ignite students' imaginations and encourage hands-on exploration, collaboration, and learning through experimentation and problem-solving. Beyond dedicated labs, we weave design thinking strategies into all subject areas, creating rich, inquiry-based learning experiences.Students on the floor with taped off sections using robotics
  • Dedicated Teacher Support: Our STEAM Teachers on Special Assignment (TOSA) team works collaboratively with teachers across all grade levels, providing coaching and support to seamlessly integrate STEAM principles into the existing curriculum, ensuring students experience STEAM learning in a variety of contexts. Targeted professional development further equips educators with expertise in STEAM and Design Thinking, enabling them to develop powerful Project-Based Learning (PBL) units aligned with the California Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

  • Additional STEAM Time: Monthly STEAM Lab Lunch activities at each school site provide extra opportunities for students to dive into exciting STEAM challenges and projects outside of their classrooms. Students also have the opportunity to share their innovative designs and projects at showcases, celebrating their achievements and inspiring future generations of STEAM leaders. • Robust Curriculum & Resources: We are focused on implementing a robust TK-8 STEAM & Design Thinking curriculum, complete with dedicated teacher support and resources, ensuring a cohesive and engaging experience across all grade levels. We strategically align STEAM concepts with the new elementary science and social studies curricula, maximizing interdisciplinary connections and creating a seamless learning experience.

LGUSD is thrilled to be on this exciting journey to enhance STEAM education and social innovation. We are committed to providing a dynamic learning environment that fosters the core attributes of our Student Success Profile: critical thinking, empathy, collaboration, communication, adaptability, and a growth mindset. By fostering creativity, problem-solving, and a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of STEAM disciplines, we are empowering students to become not just learners, but innovators and change-makers, ready to thrive in a rapidly evolving world as global citizens. We are confident that this initiative will cultivate a passion for learning, spark curiosity, and prepare our students to become empathetic, collaborative, and adaptable leaders of tomorrow.
