Superintendent's Update - May 2019 A month in review

It's hard to believe we're on the final lap of this school year. And with all the upcoming May activities, it's going to be a sprint to the finish line. I continue to be impressed by all the great community building activities taking place at all our schools and the exciting, invigorating classroom lessons. Here are a few highlights from around the district. Did you know the Fisher Middle School has a beautiful state-of-the-art dance studio and unparalleled dance program? I observed an impressive dance class under the direction of teacher Wendy Myers. I had the privilege of watching students present projects of major worldwide significance. Students are working diligently on the Rube Goldberg projects, a traditional science unit that combines science and math. Students had custom created projects on display at the annual STEAM night sponsored by LGEF. Students from Tanya Boyle's  class showcased all gadgets from pinball machines, magnetic game boards, to newly-created games. The Art Docents also highlighted their data wall unit for this year. I have viewed two lessons during the past month that were dynamic. A Georgia O'Keeffe lesson and a guest artist who created ceramic sculptures for nature. A musical highlight was the Blossom Hill first and second grade Honeybee choir under the direction of Cindy Adams. Do you know who Captain Green is? This is not only a custom created comic strip by Dave's Avenue parent, Jeff Bambas, but there is a real-life Captain Green at Lexington Elementary. Second grade student Vaughn presents himself at a school assembly as the real-life Captain Green. One of the most exciting developments for this year is the creation of a customized finance model for LGUSD that projects 5 to 7 years in the future. Why is this important? The state only requires districts to certify the current year and two subsequent years. So this is a finance coup for LGUSD to have its own forecast model. My favorite moment this past month was listening to our Fisher Middle School students recite poems they had written about the Los Gatos community. The week of May 6th through the 10th is Employee Appreciation Week. Thank you to our LGUSD staff who go over and beyond every day for Los Gatos students and families. The following staff will be recognized on May 7th.
