Every strong community is grounded in great schools. And Los Gatos schools are great. On the outside, our schools look wonderful, but on the inside, . there's a different story It's a constant struggle to raise enough money to give our students the opportunity they deserve to succeed. In the United States, where do you think California places when it comes to school funding? Up here? How about here? Nope; it's down here. California is one of the least funded states on a per pupil basis. If you're scratching your head, you're not alone. In 1978, Prop 13 passed and that changed everything. Prop 13 was designed to protect seniors and others from being forced out of their homes, and that's a good thing. But it capped the growth of property taxes, and that was the primary source of funding for our public schools. Over the last 30 years, school funding in California has not kept pace with the rising cost of educating our children. This has led to growing classroom sizes, limited funding for science and technology programs, less resources for art, music and electives. And now Los Gatos is falling further behind. Let's take a look at the highest funded districts in California similar in size to Los Gatos and how much they spend per student. Some of these districts are less affluent, and they get lots of help from the State. Los Gatos receives minimum state support.
