COVID - Frequently Asked Questions
 What is the rationale behind the State’s mask mandate to begin school?
The rationale includes an effort to protect unvaccinated students from exposure to COVID-19. Currently, all our elementary students are ineligible to receive a vaccine. At the middle school, more than 30% of students are ineligible to receive a vaccine.
A concern is the highly contagious Delta variant spreading among the unvaccinated population. This is the main reason masks are being universally mandated by CDPH.
Why follow CDPH?
We are required to follow health directives from CDPH. They have pledged to revisit the guidelines by November 1st.
How will in-person instruction be different from last year?
In-person instruction means full pre-COVID bell schedules and program offerings and a full school day on campus, including electives. We will not utilize roomers and zoomers this year.
What quarantine measures will be implemented?
The quarantine requirements for COVID exposures when BOTH individuals are masked will be modified. Students may continue to attend school for in-person instruction if they:
LGUSD offered Back to School COVID Testing on August 9, 2021.
In addition, we will have modified quarantine testing available during the school year at the District daily to shorten testing turn around time and making it easily accessible for families.
What safety measures will be implemented?
While we fully anticipate community transmission will remain low, LGUSD will continue to implement safety measures.
What about the Delta Variant? Will this impact the start of school?
The current COVID rates will not affect the start of school. All our LGUSD schools will resume full day programs and traditional pre-COVID schedules. We are following the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) guidelines and directives for schools.
Will my kids be safe at school?
The district takes the health and safety of all our students very seriously. Last year, we strictly followed county and state health protocols and did not have one confirmed case of COVID transmission at school. We will continue to strictly follow public health guidelines from CDPH.
Is the District offering an entry COVID test for students?
Yes, the test was offered Monday, August 9th and the district will offer testing for symptomatic students. For more information, visit the COVID testing page.
Given the Delta variant, are there additional precautions from CDPH the district will be following to protect staff and students? Does this include masking?
Yes, all our staff and students are required to be masked when indoors. This is recommended by the following:
Is it true students and staff have the option to go unmasked while outdoors?
Yes, it is an option for students and staff to unmask while outdoors (recess, lunch, outdoor PE, all outdoor activities and outdoor class meetings).
When will the mask mandate be lifted for students?
The mask mandate will be lifted as soon as CDPH determines it is no longer needed as a public health directive and preventative measure. We look forward to the day when conditions allow for more flexibility.
Does the District anticipate moving to a hybrid program as an option?
No, LGUSD is offering a 100% in-person school experience this year. Even though students will be masked indoors to begin the year, we are 100% back.
Will school be normal as usual?
We want to assure you that LGUSD schools are fully reopened. This includes programs like Art Docents (along with visiting artists), school assemblies, outdoor camps, sports, etc… With COVID, the greatest concern has been the loss of “humanity to humanity” and our efforts this year will reflect an all out effort to return to a normal quality school year.
What about social emotional efforts and worries about possible COVID related learning loss?
We are full steam ahead on providing quality social emotional learning experiences and interventions for our students. We recently hired an additional counselor, on the heels of the LGEF funded counselor from last year. Academically, students will be assessed at the beginning of the year for academic progress and appropriate interventions provided if necessary.
