Spelling Activities
Create your own spelling list or look one up online.
Some ideas for a word list include words with a pattern (CVCe—cute or base; CVVC—rain, beat), words from a subject in which you are interested (solar system, Jupiter), or words that are common (because, which).
Complete any of the following activities using your wordlist, and then have another person test you on how well you know your words.
____ Alphabetize the words using your word sort. (ABC Order)
____ Circle the vowels on your word sort in red.
____ Circle the consonants on your word sort in blue.
____ Write each word 3 times.
____ Make a set of flashcards for studying your words.
____ Take a practice test using 12 of your words.
|
____ Use 8 of your words in sentences. ____ Choose 10 of your words and write a synonym for each word.
____ Choose 10 of your words and write an antonym for each word.
____ Draw a picture and “hide” your words in the picture.
____ Classify each word according to its part of speech (noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, etc.)
____ Cut the words out of a magazine or newspaper and make a collage.
|
____ Go on a Word Hunt. Locate the words in textbooks or other reading materials (write down the book title and page number for each word).
____ Make a Word Search using your words.
____ For each spelling word, write 3 words with the same spelling pattern.
____ Use your words in similes. (Ex. He was as quiet as a mouse.)
____ Write a story using your words. Circle each spelling word.
|
