Spelling Activities

Create your own spelling list or look one up online.

Some ideas for a word list include words with a pattern (CVCe—cute or base; CVVC—rain, beat), words from a subject in which you are interested (solar system, Jupiter), or words that are common (because, which).

Complete any of the following activities using your wordlist, and then have another person test you on how well you know your words.

____ Alphabetize the words using your word sort. (ABC Order)
____ Circle the vowels on your word sort in red.
____ Circle the consonants on your word sort in blue.
____ Write each word 3 times.
____ Make a set of flashcards for studying your words.
____ Take a practice test using 12 of your words.
____ Use 8 of your words in sentences. ____ Choose 10 of your words and write a synonym for each word.
____ Choose 10 of your words and write an antonym for each word.
____ Draw a picture and “hide” your words in the picture.
____ Classify each word according to its part of speech (noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, etc.)
____ Cut the words out of a magazine or newspaper and make a collage.
____ Go on a Word Hunt. Locate the words in textbooks or other reading materials (write down the book title and page number for each word).
____ Make a Word Search using your words.
____ For each spelling word, write 3 words with the same spelling pattern.
____ Use your words in similes. (Ex. He was as quiet as a mouse.)
____ Write a story using your words. Circle each spelling word.

Writing (Standard: Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section.)

Use the writing prompt list, graphic organizers, and writing paper to write for at least 10 minutes a day.

Watch this video about Making a Map.  There are 2 map practice pages in the 2nd grade packet for you to complete.  Then draw a map of your street and neighborhood.  Can you show how to get to your school?

Help your family decide what will be for dinner and see what you will be able to help with. Make sure to wash your hands before you get to work! Can you set the table? Ask your family if there is something you can help cook. After dinner, draw a picture of your dinner and label the food you ate. Was it fun to help? Here is a fun read-along to go with this activity!

Sight Words: Students can practice reading, spelling, and using these words in sentences.
